Researchers at the Pedagogical Research Institute of the University of Latvia, Faculty of Education, Psychology, and Art continue to implement the Erasmus+ project “Developing Teaching Materials for Preschool Teaching Undergraduates on Computational Thinking and Introduction to Coding (EarlyCode)”.

The project will:

  • produce a course curriculum “Development Of Computational Thinking And Use Of Robotics In Preschool” for undergraduate preschool teachers,
  • develop preschool teacher handbook and supplementary teaching materials that can be used to work with preschool children,
  • introduce a training manual for lecturers, which will explain how to make better use of the developed curriculum and teaching materials in teacher education.

Based on the results of a needs study conducted by surveying undergraduate pre-school teachers in the partner countries, project partners have developed a curriculum. The content of the curriculum is aimed to combine theories and practical activities in order to promote student understanding and development of skills to introduce computational thinking and robotics in the pre-school pedagogical process.

The project partners have started preparing for remote pre-school courses, where undergraduate preschool teachers will be introduced to (1) principles of computational thinking in preschool, (2) introduction to coding and robotics, (3) use of effective and engaging methods in preschool education. The program will be attended by 5 students from each partner country and the course will take 40 hours (5 days).

The project involves partners from Latvia (University of Latvia), Italy (Scuola di Robotica), Romania (Universitatea din Bucuresti), Great Britain (Early Years - The Organization for Young Children LBG), Turkey (APEC Egitim Danismanlik Ltd.) and the project lead partner – Ahi Evran Universitesi (Turkey).

The University of Latvia is represented in the project by prof. Linda Daniela (project coordinator) and Katrīna Elizabete Puriņa-Biezā (project scientific assistant).
