Academic activity

Has been working as a lecturer at the Faculty of Education, Psychology and Art (FEPA) of the University of Latvia (UL) since 1989 (associate professor since 2016). In addition, she worked for 10 years at a minority gymnasium as a cultural history teacher. Since 2018, she has been the head of the Department of Art and Technology of FEPA, the head of the study council of the study field “Art”. She has created and managed several sub-programs of professional bachelor study program “Teacher” - “Teacher of Art History”, “Teacher of Cultural History”, “Teacher of Cultural Studies” and “Teacher of Cultural Awareness and Self-Expression in Art”. Has created and teaches study courses in art and cultural theory: History of Art, History of Contemporary Art, History of Interior, History of Graphic Design, Theoretical Foundations of Design, etc., as well as conducts methodological courses and pedagogical practices.

 

Scientific activity

Participated in international projects as an expert and group leader: for example, in the ESF-funded in-service teacher training project - development of professional and pedagogical competence of visual arts teachers (2012-2014); is an expert in the project School2030 in the field of culture and arts (“Competence approach in curriculum” ESF project since 2016). A. Avotina represents the University of Latvia in the European Network of Art and Cultural Education Observatories at UNESCO (ENO).


Creative activity

Participated in the exhibition of creative works of the lecturers of LU PPMF, Daugavpils University and Rēzekne Academy of Technology "Nail" (within the 79th International Scientific Conference of the UL) from 09.02.2021. - 30.06.2021. Available: www.ppmf.lu.lv/par-mums/zinas/zina/t/63341/
A. Avotina is a member of the International Society for Education Through Art (InSEA), the European Network for Visual Literacy (ENViL), has established and led a project and an international conference “Visual Awareness Week at the University of Latvia”, which has been taking place regularly since 2016.
Since 2016, she has participated in counseling students' scientific research work, Riga region and national olympiads and competitions, has been the chairman of the jury in the Latvian most beautiful book competition "Golden Apple Tree" and a member of international juries at Tallinn Children's Book Illustration Triennial and Bratislava Illustration Biennale.


Outside the academic room

A. Avotina is the author of textbooks and monographs, has published articles on aspects of art, education and cultural history, including 9 textbooks and methodological aids. In cooperation with the publishers “Jānis Roze” and “Zvaigzne ABC”, she has translated and edited books. A. Avotina has been the founder (in collaboration with Ieva Bečeris) and editor (1998-2018) of the magazine “Iespiedgrafika”, in which more than 160 of her articles on the history of printed graphics, reviews and interviews with graphic designers have been published.
